Sandra Bullock stars as Angela Bennett, Cathedral Systems' top analyst. As a well-paid freelancer, she spends her days ironing out bugs in games designed for adolescent boys or tracking down viruses hacked into unsuspecting systems, and her nights "chatting" with other shy cyber-jockeys on the `Net. She's quite happy with her sheltered, if somewhat lonely routine...until the very life she's made for herself pushes her headlong into the middle of a murderous web of corruption and conspiracy.

As a favor to one of her colleagues, Dale Hessman (Ray McKinnon), Angela conducts a preliminary analysis of a puzzling "beta" prototype of a new Internet program that peculiarly allows the user access to such highly sensitive databases as the Federal Reserve Board, the IRS, the Atomic Energy Commission, and others. Angela is curious about this seemingly random anomaly. Dale offers to fly down from San Francisco so they can work on it together. Except Dale doesn't make it - his small plane mysteriously crashes into an industrial park that looms up out of nowhere.

After discovering the enigmatic program, Angela's life begins to change. The computers have gone crazy at LAX as she attempts to board a flight for her much-needed and often-delayed vacation in Mexico. On the Mexican beach, she meets Jack Devlin (Jeremy Northam), a charming, wealthy young businessman who seems to share her outlook on the world. But a seemingly positive experience quickly turns negative when Angela is nearly killed for the computer diskette carrying the program. Her keys, passport, and all identification papers are lost. Someone has even checked her out of the hotel and stolen her belongings.

And that's only the beginning. Angela soon learns that using the Internet, someone has altered every record of her life.

They have given her a suspicious new name, identity and a falsified police record. With little money, no identification and no credibility, Angela must search within herself for the strength and resources to fight the seemingly unbeatable forces determined to silence her.
